Neck Pain

Neck pain (very common!) and Chiropractic treatment

By far most neck pain is what’s know as ‘mechanical neck pain’ meaning the pain is arising from stiff or restricted spinal joints and tight neck/shoulder muscles ….. And Chiropractors treat this every day and all the time…..and very successfully 🙂

Chiropractic care is an excellent option for anyone suffering from chronic or occasional neck pain. Not only is it safe and non-invasive it can provide long-term relief by addressing the underlying causes of your discomfort rather than just treating its symptoms with medications or injections that come with their own side effects Mild to moderate pain in the neck is very very common in the UK. With the amount of computer work, driving, texting and TV watching that most of us do, it is not surprising that neck pain is one of the conditions that chiropractors treat most often.

The majority of neck problems are brought on by the long-term effect of bad/wrong posture putting excessive strain on the joints and neck musculature. This can cause loss of proper joint movement and muscle spasm.

We will always ask you detailed questions not only about your neck pain but also about your posture at work and at home, previous medical history, lifestyle and most of all your habits. We try to do some ‘detective work’ to find the reason for your neck pain – and for most people that is bad posture while texting on the phone or the way they sit with the laptop/tablet. If we can pinpoint what has caused your neck pain all we have to do is fix it !! ……..And ask you to change your habit 🙂

Neck Pain

When neck pain is the result of working at a computer, it is the prolonged holding the head too high or low that causes the problem. Getting up and moving around multiple times during the day can help, as can raising your screen so the top of it is right at eye level. We may also recommend a couple of quick stretches/exercise that you can do while waiting for the kettle to boil;)

At times the lack of joint movement can cause irritation to the nerves in the neck causing pain where the nerve ends. This is known as ‘referred’ pain and often gives rise to pain felt around the shoulder joint or even down the arm.

Referred pain to the back of the head or even behind the eyes is common with cervicogenic headache (headache arising from the neck). This type of headache responds very well to chiropractic treatment of the neck joints and neck muscles.
