The hamstrings play a crucial role in many daily activities, such as, walking, running,jumping, and controlling some movement in the trunk. The hamstrings cross and act upon two joints – the hip and the knee and they are influenced by the lumbar spine.

One of the most common injuries among athletes is a pulled hamstring. We see a lot of runners and footballers with this kind of injury.

To understand this injury, it is important to first understand the structures that make up this portion of the leg.

The hamstring itself is not actually a single structure. It is a group of four muscles that provide support between the pelvis and the knee. Three of the four muscles actually cross the knee joint and are connected to the tibia (lower leg) by a series of tendons; the fourth muscle connects at the knee joint. If you stand straight and bend forward to touch your toes, you will feel all four hamstring muscles being stretched (mentioned here to make you
aware of where the muscles are, NOT a good way to stretch hamstrings or lower back!!)

As far as the injuries are concerned, there are two types of pulled hamstrings. The most common involves the muscles in the back of the leg. The injury is caused by a sudden shock presented by jumping, kicking, or accelerated running. Those suffering from this injury will note pain in the back of the thigh along with swelling and, in some cases, bruising.

The second pulled hamstring injury involves the area where the muscle group meets the pelvis. This is the less common of the two, and manifests itself with pain in the buttocks and the back of the upper leg. The pain increases every time the foot comes in contact with the ground or it may be uncomfortable to sit for a long period of time.

Both types of pulled hamstrings can be treated by a chiropractor through deep tissue massage techniques ( we will refer you to one of our sports massage therapists for this), after we have done adjustments to the lumbar spine to increase mobility of the lower back. ** It is worth mentioning here that a chronic lower back problem can cause
tightness in the hamstrings. This increases the risk of sustaining a sprain/strain injury to the hamstrings (pulled hamstring).

Poor Posture

Poor posture is often the result of an individual’s daily activities and patterns of muscular dysfunction. Some muscles become tight or shortened while others lengthen and become weakened. Many factors contribute to  bad posture, including work, lifestyle and stress levels.

Having poor posture can also contribute to a number of problems as it affects the physiological functioning of the human body. Changes in posture can result in neck and back pain and headaches.

Changes in posture can present as rounding of the shoulders which may also be elevated, and a forward carriage of the head. This results in extra stress on the joints of the spine and the surrounding muscles and soft tissues. The shoulder joints lose stability which alters normal movement patterns of the arms.

Another common pattern seen is a forward tilting of the hips which increases the normal curve of the lower back and causes the stomach to stick out. As a result there is increased stress on the spinal joints of the lower back and pelvis.

Other common findings include unnatural tilting of the head, one shoulder or hip being slightly higher than the other, abnormal changes in gait, or feet that turn in or out.

Those who spend a lot of time sitting, such as drivers or office workers are at risk of developing poor posture. More recently there has also been an increase in children and adolescents with posture related back pain as a result of carrying heavy school bags (often incorrectly) and spending hours slumped in front of the television or gaming.

Poor posture is easily recognised by a chiropractor, as are the various musculoskeletal issues resulting from it.

Chiropractors use specific joint manipulations and mobilisations, and soft tissue therapies to address any muscular tension or weakness that has resulted from postural abnormalities. Although the chiropractor cannot force good posture on a patient, he or she can realign the structures of the back, neck, hips and pelvis, recommend exercises to strengthen the core muscles or address any muscle imbalance that may exist as well as giving ergonomic advice.

Trapped Nerve in the Neck

Trapped nerve in the neck and chiropractic treatment:

A trapped nerve occurs when a nerve is compressed or irritated by surrounding tissues such as bones, muscles, ligaments, or tendons. This compression causes inflammation around the nerve root and results in symptoms like tingling, numbness, burning sensations, and shooting pains down (normally just) one arm. Common causes of trapped nerves include:

– poor posture ( desk, while texting, on the iPad)
– repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
– whiplash injuries from car accidents
– herniated discs in the spine (NOT common)
– spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine) from Osteoarthritis
– direct trauma to the neck area.

The medical terminology for a trapped nerve in the neck is: Cervical Radiculopathy but most people refer to it as a pinched or trapped nerve in the neck.

This condition gives rise to severe and constant pain in the arm, often going all the way down to and affecting the hand. In most cases the arm pain is so strong that it is not even touched by painkillers. It’s often associated with tingling or pins and needles in the hand, numbness and even weakness of the shoulder, arm or hand.

Bursitis

Bursitis is a relatively common condition that can cause joint pain, swelling and tenderness. Bursa are fluid filled cushions located at points of friction, most commonly between a muscle or tendon, and bone. Their purpose is to provide protection to the joints and surrounding soft tissues, and to offer lubrication for the muscle or tendon to slide across the bone during activity.

Bursitis treatment

Bursitis is inflammation and swelling of the bursa and usually occurs at the shoulder, elbow, hip or knee, however it can occur anywhere in the body.

Bursa can become inflamed as a result of direct injury, or repetitive movements that over time lead to wear and tear.

The condition can also be a result of other inflammatory causes such as Rheumatoid arthritis, or gout.

With bursitis any movement that involves the affected bursa will be painful as the motion of the tendon and muscle across the bone irritates the inflamed bursa which tends to perpetuate the problem. The involved joint and surrounding muscles can then become tight and restricted.

The pain is usually worse during and after activity and commonly the joint will be achy and stiff the following day.

Bursitis commonly occurs in footballers and rugby  players as a result of collisions or injuries, and often to joiners, electricians, tilers and gardeners who have to spend a lot of time kneeling down.

Treatment of bursitis depends on the cause of it, but it often involves resting the affected joint, applying ice, and chiropractic care if suitable to relieve muscular tension, reduce inflammation, and restore normal joint function and biomechanics.

Back Pain

Back Pain is the most common condition that we treat. We treat back pain many times a day, every single day and all year around. Sometimes back pain is referred to as lumbago.

We are very experienced in diagnosing and treating conditions of the back and spine but we are  also able to identify if a referral to another specialist or if imaging like a scan is needed.

Back pain can be felt on one or both sides of the back. It can be across the shoulders, between the shoulder blades, in the small of the back or from the waist and into the buttocks and down the front or the back of the legs.

Acute and Chronic Back Pain

At times back pain is associated with other symptoms: pin and needles, tingling, numbness, leg pain ( often referred to as sciatica).

Most people will suffer from back pain at some point during their lives. It can be very painful and persistent and some people suffer repeated episodes.

It’s worth getting an assessment if the pain does not go away after a few days or if the condition starts to get worse.

Early treatment will help you get better faster.

Back pain may come on after a specific incident such as after a fall on ice, heavy lifting or bending awkwardly. Or it can develop gradually over weeks/months as a result of poor/wrong posture  or it may come on after a long period of stress and worry.

By far the most common type of back pain is ‘mechanical’ back pain. This means that the pain is coming from the spinal muscles, joints and ligaments. This is also referred to as musculo-skeletal back pain.

Although it can be extremely painful and make even small movements difficult, ‘mechanic’ back pain is not related to any serious underlying condition and there are no trapped or compressed nerves.

Simply put, the pain is from stiff or restricted spinal joints and tight spinal musculature. And Chiropractors treat this all the time…..and very successfully.

Less frequently, the nerves of the back can become irritated, trapped or compressed. There are many reasons as to why this would happen, but slipped discs or wear and tear can lead to pain running down the leg which is often referred to as sciatica. Sometimes this can be associated with pins and needles, numbness, tingling and/or weakness in leg and foot.

Back pain treatment involves gentle adjustments to the back, stretching and soft tissue techniques to free up the restricted/stiff joints and relax the surrounding muscles.

We may ask you to use heat or ice, to do some exercises at home and make changes to your lifestyle.

Neck Pain

Neck pain (very common!) and Chiropractic treatment

By far most neck pain is what’s know as ‘mechanical neck pain’ meaning the pain is arising from stiff or restricted spinal joints and tight neck/shoulder muscles ….. And Chiropractors treat this every day and all the time…..and very successfully 🙂

Neck Pain

When neck pain is the result of working at a computer, it is the prolonged holding the head too high or low that causes the problem. Getting up and moving around multiple times during the day can help, as can raising your screen so the top of it is right at eye level. We may also recommend a couple of quick stretches/exercise that you can do while waiting for the kettle to boil;)

At times the lack of joint movement can cause irritation to the nerves in the neck causing pain where the nerve ends. This is known as ‘referred’ pain and often gives rise to pain felt around the shoulder joint or even down the arm.

Referred pain to the back of the head or even behind the eyes is common with cervicogenic headache (headache arising from the neck). This type of headache responds very well to chiropractic treatment of the neck joints and neck muscles.

Osteoporosis – can I still get chiropractic treatment- yes!

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become fragile and weak due to low calcium levels. This can put those affected at increased risk of fractures, especially in post-menopausal women or individuals who have taken long-term steroid medications.

 

Osteoporosis

Having osteoporosis does not necessarily mean that you cannot receive chiropractic care for problems such as neck and shoulder pain, back pain and arthritic pain.
